If you are a victim of hate or discrimination
When you are a victim of discrimination or crime, and in particular a hate crime, it can feel very isolating so it is important to share your experience and get some support as soon as possible.
Whilst the incident is fresh in your mind you should make a note of:
- The time and date of the incident
- Where exactly it happened
- What exactly was said and by whom
- The name or description of the perpetrator
- The name and contact details of any witnesses
All this information can be critical if you wish to take action against the person who has targeted you.
If incidents occur regularly then keep a record of all of this information. Local authorities (your local council) or housing provider can usually provide you with log sheets or an alternative way to do this easily.
The most important thing you can do is report it. If you are strong enough to make that call then you will not only be helping yourself but also you could prevent other people from going through the same thing.
If you feel the need for urgent emotional support please call the Samaritans on 116 123 and there will be somebody to take your call whatever time or day it is.

You should be offered additional, specialist support but do not be afraid to ask if you feel you need additional support when reporting a hate crime to the police.

If you are aware that somebody else is a victim of hate or discrimination
There are two options if you are aware that somebody else has been a victim. You can either encourage them to get in support directly or you can make a report on their behalf.
If you want to make a report on behalf of somebody else you should not provide the victim’s details without their permission unless you fear for their or another person’s safety. Even anonymous reports can be helpful as it can help to guide agencies as to where there are issues and could help focus our proactive work in the community.
